GATHERINGS, is the title of a series of recent paintings which began by my looking at images of processions, parades, and demonstrations where the representatives of figures are together or spread apart moving laterally across the picture plane. The suggestion of narrative is both tempting and familiar but remains ambiguous as the identity of each person, their actions, and their relationships to one another is left unclear. Light is as much the subject in these paintings as the tension created by the rhythmic play of color, shape and intervals between figures and ground. Occasionally the blur becomes an interruption and further limitation to our ability to read these paintings.
